Mr. Joseph Apikian is currently a Freshman at UCLA and studies Economics. He has become very involved with Chabad at UCLA and takes interests in attending each and every Shabbat at the house of his local Rabbi, Dovid Gurevich, and his wife Elisa. He has also recently joined the Chabad Student Government, and will take the positions of General Board Member and Sinai Scholars Coordinator for the Spring Quarter at UCLA. Joseph’s hobbies include reading modern philosophy, playing basketball with his friends, and learning about Jewish tradition and ethics.
Joseph’s paper “Say Shalom to Shabbat” discusses the religious and practical significance of Shabbat. He was inspired by all the happy and joyous times he has had on previous Shabbats, and also appreciates the social atmosphere that can be difficult to find during all of our busy work weeks. Joseph hopes you enjoy his research paper, and wishes all of you wonderful Shabbat Shaloms for the future.
This presentation was delivered at the Sinai Scholars Academic Symposium 2010. The Sinai Scholars Symposium is a yearly conference for university students, hosted by the Sinai Scholars Society. Students from around the world gather with an esteemed panel of Ivy League professors, world-class Torah scholars and experts in their field to study, discuss and present their thoughts on various subjects that deal with Judaism and the modern world. Each student prepares an academic paper which they present to their colleagues and a panel of judges.
